Dorset Council - Waste Promotions Assistant

Location: County Hall, Colliton Park, Dorset, DT1 1XJ

Contract: Initial contract to 30th September 2021

Hours: Full Time – Monday to Friday – 6:45am to 2:00pm (Hours could change in future)

Payrate: £9.14 an Hour

Main Purpose of role:

The purpose of this post is to increase the quantity and quality of waste recovered, recycled, composted across the County; and to represent the Dorset Waste Partnership (DWP) and its policies; and to educate future generations of recyclers.  

Main responsibilities and duties

Customer care - meeting Dorset residents by various different methods including manning roadshows and events at various locations (e.g. supermarkets, town centres),

doorstepping (visiting residents at home without prior notice and carrying out pre-arranged visits) and speaking to users of the Household Recycling Centres (HRCs). The following will need to be explained: -

How to use the new Recycle for Dorset service

What materials can be recycled and composted, and how quality can be maximised.

Waste issues and what happens to waste sent for recycling/composting; and

How to reduce waste production and reuse more.

Educational visits - assisting with visits at the education centre and other locations by schools, youth groups and community groups to: - 

Explain important waste issues.

Encourage reduction, reuse and recycling of waste; and

Assist with ensuring the health and safety of visitors. 

Represent the DWP to explain waste policy and deal with enquiries, including: -

Explaining the Recycle for Dorset service.

Dealing with abusive and threatening behaviour from those who are unhappy with the new waste service they will receive.

Explaining why recycling collections are carried out in the manner that they are and why certain materials cannot be recycled.

Explaining what happens to materials after they are collected for recycling.

Explaining various waste reduction issues such as home composting, reducing junk mail and SMART shopping to enable residents to change their behaviour.

Be responsible for providing the services above at a number of events/roadshows, at all of the HRCs and at peoples’ doorsteps.  This will involve: - 

Following a schedule depending on events planned, doorstepping programmed and HRC usage, demand and educational visits; and

Travelling across the County. 

Record keeping - keeping records of the number of residents engaged with and their attitudes to waste issues and suggestions for an improved service. 

A monitoring form will be provided to be completed each day, with a monthly summary also required.  

Working relationships - the jobholder must maintain relationships with a variety of stakeholders including colleagues, councillors, contractors, residents and others. 

The jobholder will be required to make contact with local retailers, parish councils, supermarkets etc to organise events and distribute literature.

The jobholder will be expected to explain the campaign they are undertaking and represent the DWP.
