Job Description

Learning Mentor – (STKP Met) – GM Collaboration

Location – SK1 3TA

£16.95- On going contract

1. To support delivery of Youth Justice Education, Training & Employment targets by ensuring young people in contact with Criminal Justice System are in education, training or employment.

2. To work together with members of the multi-agency Youth Justice Team, to promote learning and offer support to young people, aged 16+ into employment.

3. To liaise with the custodial establishments and, where appropriate, participate in the young person’s resettlement plan.

4. To make or contribute to assessments to assist in identifying young peoples’ learning style and suitable placements for them.

5. To assist and support young people to secure and retain a place in education and employment, and to overcome barriers to learning. This will include practical support (e.g. accompanying them to appointments) and planning and delivery / contribution of interventions designed to equip them to achieve this, utilisation of an encouraging approach, a high level of contact with the young person and contact with other family members.

6. To work with the appropriate agencies to address those welfare issues that impact on their ability to learn.

7. To undertake home visits as necessary to work with young people and their parents to overcome barriers to learning within education / training / employment

8. To liaise and work with existing and potential education / training providers in the area to find / develop / support both new and existing opportunities for young people in contact with the YJS.

9. Organise and deliver activities designed to contribute to aims of post, eg homework clubs, groups to assist in overcoming barriers to learning / taking up opportunities.

10. To offer ongoing voluntary ETE support over an agreed period of time following the end of a court order.

11. To keep up to date computerised records of work with young people and their families and to provide YJS with progress reports and management information in relation to this post as required.

12. Track, monitor, evaluate and record the young person’s progression in education/training/employment.

13. To represent the Youth Offending Team in a variety of settings, e.g. multi-agency groups, community and school meetings.

14. To cover for other team members, so as to ensure continuity of services during staff absence and variable workload pressures.

15. To attend supervision meetings with the line manager and team meetings as required.

16. To actively promote anti-discriminatory practice in all aspects of the work.

17. To undertake other duties appropriate to grade and responsibility of post as required.
