Senior Legal Officer – Wakefield (Temp Vacancy)

Umbrella Pay Rate: £15.00ph

Full-Time (37 hours)

Job Purpose:

To undertake and be responsible for legal work necessary to discharge the Council’s functions and to implement the policies of the Council in accordance with the objective of providing an effective and efficient in-house Legal Service. In particular to provide legal support, assistance and advice on matters relating to Safeguarding Children and Family Support, including preparation of complex legal documentation, negotiation and research without supervision. To deputise for the Team Manager and Legal Manager on any issue falling within the range of duties and responsibilities carried out by the post holder.

Accountabilities:  

  • To take responsibility for specific projects or ongoing areas of work within Legal Services relating to Safeguarding Children and Family Services as allocated by the Team Manager or Legal Manager in line and in accordance with the specific tasks set out below in relation to each level.
  • To assist the Service Manager, Team Manager and Legal Manager in providing the directions and leadership necessary for the efficient provision of the Council’s Legal Services ensuring that the appropriate professional standards are maintained.
  • To establish effective working relationships with officers within Legal Services and officers in other departments, other agencies, Solicitors, Barristers, Judges and authorities.
  • To represent the Council to relevant external organisations and also to attend and advise at meetings of the Council, its Committees, Panels and Project Boards to enable Legal Services to play a full and effective role in the corporate working of the Council in order that the Council’s objectives can be achieved.
  • To contribute fully to the Department’s responses to corporate initiatives and the achievement of Lexcel.
  • To undertake training, development and supervision of staff within Legal Services and, as appropriate, staff in other areas of the Council, to ensure that individuals achieve their highest contribution. To include Appraisals and other Human Resource responsibilities as required.
  • To engage with relevant continuing professional development
  • To undertake other duties within competence and experience as requested, in accordance with changing organisational objectives.
  • To support the Team Manager and Legal Manager in relation to gathering and reporting case data e.g. for tracking purposes.
