JOB TITLE: Biomedical Scientist, Specialist (Band 6)

LOCATION: Blackburn

PLACEMENT: ASAP, 37.5 hours a week

PAY RATE: from £22.90 per hour

4Recruitment Services are seeking a Band 6 Biomedical Scientist Specialist for our client based in Blackburn, East Lancashire. The Hours of work are 37.5 hours per week on a rota basis covering day, evening and night shifts.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:

  • To perform the complex scientific and technical work of the department. Must be fully competent in all aspects of the work of all technical sections and be able to perform that work without supervision. Staff will rotate through all sections on a regular basis.  Sections include bacteriology in the routine, urine, enteric, genital, blood culture, sterile fluid, mycobacteria culture and serology sections. 

  • To be able to process a wide variety of sample types and have the required skill and experience in the isolation, identification, and antimicrobial sensitivity testing of a broad range of pathogenic micro-organisms.

  • To be able to aid in the diagnosis of a broad range of infectious diseases and conditions through the application of the knowledge, skill and experience required of an HCPC registered Biomedical Scientist.

  • To accurately perform routine microbiological analysis, following standard operating procedures, of all clinical sample types and through good working practices contribute to the generation of meaningful and logical patient reports.

  • To perform the maintenance, quality control and record keeping for highly expensive, complex and specialist items of scientific equipment to ensure that they function correctly and are available for use at all times.

  • To support the evaluation of laboratory reagents, diagnostic systems, methods and instrumentation as required.

  • To contribute to maintaining a high-quality service and to work with the Quality Manager in the setting and achieving of quality related goals.

  • To participate in both internal and external quality control assurance programmes to ensure the department maintains and can demonstrate high standards of practice.

  • To supervise and help in the training and development of trainee Biomedical Scientist and Medical Laboratory Assistant staff, in line with the departmental guidelines, statutory regulations and standard operating procedures.

  • To maintain personal knowledge and awareness of current developments in relevant scientific and technical fields through evidence of continuing professional development (CPD).

  • To participate actively and effectively in the staff performance and personal development review scheme.

  • To be aware of and monitor consumable and reagent stock supplies as they are used, reporting shortages or low stock levels to the departmental senior staff.

ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS FOR THE ROLE ARE:

  • Must hold registration with the Health & Care Professions Council (HCPC).

  • Essential academic qualifications are:

  • BSc Honours in Biomedical Science accredited by the Institute of Biomedical Science (IBMS)

  • or, if non-accredited, “topped up” with a further qualification acceptable to the IBMS

  • or an equivalent (for example, Higher National Certificate or Diploma in Biomedical Sciences)

  • Able to perform routine laboratory techniques within the field of Microbiology

  • Essential experience must be at least 2 years after registration with the HCPC together with completion of the IBMS Specialist Diploma in Microbiology.

  • Must undertake Continuous Professional Development (CPD) to promote personal development in relevant scientific, technical and professional fields. Must actively contribute to the creation of a personal development plan and strive to achieve its aims.

  • Must be highly skilled in the isolation, identification and susceptibility testing of micro-organisms to a level that allows the diagnosis of microbiological disease and the provision of treatment options as appropriate.

  • Must be able to demonstrate high levels of manual dexterity and hand/eye co-ordination.

  • Must have a good level of knowledge and understanding of relevant safety regulations, legislation and departmental policies.

  • Must be able to effectively supervise subordinate staff.

  • Must have an awareness of the current content of the UKAS and ISO 15189 quality standards.
